A simple starting path

How to start without wasting time

Many programs vary by location, funding period, or paperwork requirements. These four steps can help you reach the right office sooner.

Start with your state

Many benefits and local programs change by state, county, or city.

Choose the closest problem

Housing, food, utilities, taxes, healthcare, and home repair often have different entry points.

Contact the right office

Use official agencies, 211, an Area Agency on Aging, or another trusted local organization.

Gather useful documents

Many programs ask for some mix of ID, income information, proof of address, bills, or benefit notices.

Real people who can help

Local support for seniors and families

When you are not sure which program fits, a local office or community referral service can often point you in the right direction.

Area Agencies on Aging

Find state and local aging offices that connect older adults with benefits, meals, transportation, care, and other services.
